WORLD FAMOUS PHOTOGRAPHER ARRIVES IN ST LUCIA
TO TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS FOR
INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY EXHIBITION

Gered Mankowitz, the photographer who made his name 30 year ago with his images of rock and roll icons such as Jimmy Hendrix, arrived in St Lucia on 6th June to spend 3 weeks shooting some of St Lucia’s most famous people and places.

A Portrait of St Lucia

Sponsored by the Discovery Hotel in Marigot Bay and supported by the Tourist Board, the 50 Mankowitz portraits will be a time capsule of life in St Lucia on the 25th Anniversary of Independence.  The Exhibition, titled ‘A Portrait of St Lucia’, will be shown in London and New York before finally coming home in 2005 where it will be part of Discovery’s grand opening celebrations in 2005.  The final resting place of this unique ‘Snapshot in Time’ may well be in Dame Pearlette’s museum at Government House, where it could be a permanent archive for the education and enjoyment of future generations.

Says Judith Verity of Discovery, “There are so many beautiful people and places in St Lucia that this seemed like an ideal opportunity to create something of lasting value to celebrate the Silver Jubilee.

Mankowitz’s hectic schedule will take him all over the island in the next three weeks, from Boo Hinkson on Pigeon Island to the Prime Minister at Moule a Chique lighthouse in Vieux Fort.  Many of the island’s wonderful Heritage Tourism sites will also be on the itinerary, including the Turtle Watching guides at Grande Anse, the Fond Doux estate and Mamiku Gardens.
