REALTORS ASSOCIATION GIVES ST. LUCIANS AN OPPORTUNITY TO EARN A SECOND INCOME!

The Economy of St. Lucia has been severely disrupted by the introduction of new prices for all oil related products. There has to be serious adjustments in the way business is operated and pencils’ points must now be sharpened to tackle wastage and all other forms of extravagance in Government and the Private Sector. One lesson that can be learned in dealing with internationally traded commodities to prevent future shocks to consumers is to adjust prices in a timely manner. There should have been two increases at the pumps since the last price adjustment. Prices must reflect changes in international commodities whether they go up or down. The unfortunate reality is that when prices go up, they seldom come down.

We now have to look out for a substantial increase in the price of Flour. This is a wake up call for the people of the region. We must not only say we are independent, we must become self sufficient. We must work harder in building our nation and providing for ourselves and families. The laid back, perpetual tourist position must change. Self reliance is vital. The time has come for Change in our behaviour. The leaders in society must now stand up and call a spade a spade and take all necessary steps to change the mind set of our people. Instill in them the necessary positive habits that everyone seems to adopt when living in the developed countries.
In these turbulent times, it is all about putting food on the table and there has to be a way in to create the necessary jobs.

While there is every possibility that some employers as a first strike will seek to reduce their pay roll, I believe that we can increase the labour force significantly with the introduction of extended shopping hours during week days and opening at weekends and holidays. This will encourage visitors from neighbouring islands to visit St. Lucia to cash in on bargains. The restaurants and bars in the city must be upgraded as a matter of urgency. Castries must become more visitor friendly.

The recent rush by individuals to participate in the Realtors Course confirms that persons have finally got around to the reality that there is need for a second job. Many persons are quietly establishing Multiple Sources of Income. Creativity will be the order of the day. Job creation is going to be a joint undertaking by Government and the Private Sector. Attention will have to be paid to developing opportunities for the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Sector. The supporting institutions of this sector must be given the support to inform, educate and identify new business opportunities for existing and potential businesspersons. The Small Business Administration in the USA is everything to the small businesses. The Small Enterprise Development Unit (SEDU) and the St. Lucia Industrial & Small Business Association (SLISBA) will have to be supported financially and otherwise to offer programmes and services to MSMEs that will accelerate job creation in the sector. Eighty four percent of all businesses in the USA are small businesses – businesses that generate less than one million US dollars in sales per annum.

A QUOTE from Napoleon Hill “Successful people know where to buy knowledge” is timely as the Realtors’ Association scores big with their Beginner’s Course for Real Estate Agents. The Association in its second year of existence offered the Course to the public and the response was overwhelming.

Course participants were addressed by Industry Experts and Professionals in other related areas of interest. Forty five persons received Certificate of Participation and will be attached to Real Estate Brokers for a period of one year as Referral Agents. Participants expressed satisfaction with the content and delivery of the presentations and are looking forward to other courses offered by the Association. A similar programme will be offered to persons on the West Coast in a few weeks time.

St. Lucians are very resilient people and the storm will soon pass. Life goes on. However, we must resolve that as a result of the austerity measures we will of necessity have to adopt, we will emerge as a determined and industrious people.

Here is my Motivational Pick of the week:
IT’S ALWAYS A GOOD TIME TO CHANGE
The first step toward getting somewhere
is to decide that you’re not going to stay
where you are.
You’re a product of your environment.
So choose an environment
that will best develop you toward your goals.
Analyze your life in terms of your environment.
Are the things around you helping you toward
your success or are they holding you back?
Your world today is a living expression of how
you are using and have used your mind.
It’s something that you can change at any time.
You don’t have to remain a captive of your environment.
Don’t say “If I could change, I would change,”
say “I can change, and I will change.”
