PUT LESSONS LEARNED AT CONFERENCES & WORKSHOPS TO WORK IN YOUR ORGANISATION!!!
Saint Lucia continues to be the conference destination of choice in the OECS. June is one of the busiest months so far this year. CAIC, Commonwealth Secretariat, Caricom, OAS and other agencies would have held conferences and workshops during the month of June, 2008.
Persons who attend these activities must be complimented for taking time off of their busy schedules. The real value is not only informing themselves to serve their organizations and the nation at a higher level but the opportunity to gain knowledge of how other countries are taking care of business. The tourism and manufacturing sectors looked at Benchmarking at a recent workshop sponsored by the OPSR in collaboration with the St. Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association and the St. Lucia Manufacturers Association.
It is important to note that as we move forward that we appreciate that Consultants have a vital role to play in bringing experiences of the developed world to the notice of local entrepreneurs and professionals. It also gives local persons participating in the various programmes an opportunity to compare and understand the processes that bring about the transformation and advancement that take place in the countries of the developed world.
Several years now, we have been told about the great economic strides that Singapore has made and how many of the neighbouring countries referred to as the Asian Tigers continue to pursue economic activities at an unimaginable scale. Today, we hear about the wonders of Dubai. How can we describe the success of these nations? It appears to me that these countries don’t only talk about facilitating the private sector but create enabling environment for businesses to grow and prosper.
The governments of successful nations put money into institutions that promote research and development, and recognize persons who make contributions to innovation and technology. They also make available, resources to advance study programmes in areas that will enable the nation to take advantage of new trends in services. Their leaders at all levels of industry strive for excellence as they carve out their niches in the market place.
Whenever I am given the opportunity to attend a conference/workshop, I look for new ideas. I am convinced that the time has come for several interest groups to be established across the country that will come up with ideas that will take our country to the next level. Government has to be oriented to the fact that the private sector is the engine of growth. The growth and expansion of businesses are the pillars of economic progress which will guarantee social benefits to the citizens.
There is urgent need for an immediate and massive outreach programme of motivation across the nation that will produce a shift in the thinking of the citizens. It is necessary to replace despair with hope. It is not always money, it is the response of the people to the message that will bring about a commitment to progress that will make them agents of change.

How can we, the people of St. Lucia become agents of change? Let us begin the work at the most important level. Let us change the way we think. Let us try to remove the word Can’t from our vocabulary and replace it with CAN. Yes we can!
