EDWARD HARRIS AT LARGE!

IT IS TIME FOR A NEW DIRECTION!!!

The fun and frolic of Carnival is over; it is time to get down to serious business. High on the agenda should be planning strategies to cope with the harsh economic realities. St. Lucia is a special case. The effects of the global crisis are yet to have a serious impact. It seems as though in many instances it is business as usual. It looks on the surface that nothing has changed, but there is concern for the future. It is time for steps to be taken to stimulate the economy by introducing new programmes that will excite those who carry the entrepreneurial torch. I wrote in my column on several occasions that it was time for the second and third job to keep abreast of the demands in these difficult times that we now face.

I am begging for ideas, no one is volunteering. I will love to see some of the ideas that I have shared over time be implemented. I am always ready to share but have decided to change my approach. It is my opinion that when there is no fee attached to a service or recommendations are made freely, the recipients attach no value. I have concluded that my approach should be changed. Today, everyone is looking for an opportunity. I have two great opportunities which I am applying in a limited way because of my new approach. I will only share my ideas with anyone who sends me an email at eaharrisdestiny@gmail.com There are two positions which need to be considered, 1) everyone is not broke, and 2) there are persons seeking to invest. And the shocker is that there are still businesses that you can establish with little or no money.

Sometimes the responses to my articles are very encouraging. A few days ago I received an email from a young man as follows: “My name is ….. & like you I believe that St. Lucians have innovative ideas that are marketable. I have developed a simple solution to a problem which has plagued me for quite sometime. A simple tool which solves a problem many don’t know exists. I need your help to make it a reality. If you’re interested I can be contacted at Tel #.Think about it…If you wouldn’t….Who will? THANK YOU”. Upon receiving the email I called the young man immediately and was able to set up an appointment for him to meet with a specialist in the industry.

We are living in a time when business persons are giving all types of excuses for their lack of involvement in business associations and in their communities. The majority of persons I have discussed this matter with are busy with their day to day businesses and while I fully understand the need for monitoring what is going on in their businesses, I feel strongly that some time must be spent in keeping abreast with developments in their industry and giving back to their communities.

I had the unenviable task of being the Returning Officer for the elections of the recently held AGM of the Guyana – St. Lucia Association on Saturday, 25th July, 2009 at the Castries Comprehensive School. Pastor Sherwin Griffith was elected Chairman with a team that I feel confident will definitely take the Association to the next level. I am hopeful that I will be in a position to make the same statement when the outcome of the St. Lucia Industrial & Small Business Association (SLISBA) election results are declared on Sunday, 2nd August, 2009 at their 20th AGM. This will be an important meeting as the Association is once again at the crossroads and will need to be energised. I am hoping that business persons operating in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Sector will turn out in large numbers and put their support behind the new Board of Directors that will emerge.

Hereunder is my selected motivational piece of the week.

HAPPINESS IS A BYPRODUCT OF ACTIVITY
Happiness lies in the joy of achievement,
the thrill of creative effort.
The human spirit needs to accomplish,
to achieve, to triumph to be happy.
Happiness does not come from doing easy work.
It comes from the afterglow of satisfaction after
the achievement of a difficult task that demands
your best.
Your personal growth itself contains the seed of happiness.
You cannot pursue happiness by itself.
There is no happiness except in the realization that you
have accomplished something.
Happiness thrives in activity.
It’s a running river, not a stagnant pond.
