SUCCESSFUL PROFESSIONALS AND ENTREPRENEURS
NEED TO TELL THEIR STORIES

America is a story telling country. Americans tell their stories to their home audiences and then to the world. Many persons have made millions from writing how they made their fortune. They do not always write about success, they do an equally good job at writing about failure. There is always a story to be told. In America, persons who fail are encouraged, not despised. This is a lesson we in the Caribbean must learn and learn fast. In the next few years there are going to be countless failures in this region. We are not immune to the economic fall out being experienced globally. We need to become a story telling nation. It is time that Professionals and Entrepreneurs tell their stories to those who are seeking to find their way in this depressed world. If we are ashamed of our failures, let us talk about our successes. Join me in forming a Speakers’ Forum to share experiences that will give guidance to the old and young and excite them to be their best.

I was fortunate to attend the press launch of DIVINE CONNECTIONS on Wednesday, 2nd September, 2009 at the Palm Haven Hotel, Rodney Bay. I was heartened by the purpose driven young professional who left her comfort zone as a Specialist in Quick Books Accounting System and ventured into an Internet E-Marketing business. Ms. Syreeta Tu-Che’ Alcee is the Chief Executive of the project. She is ably assisted by Mr. Romulus Flermius – Web Developer and Ms. Jackie Cherebin-Weekes – Manager. The project received the endorsement of Mr. Joseph Maxwell, Insurance Executive and Entrepreneur. A lot can be expected from Ms. Alcee as she pursues her several goals including music and writing. I invite you to visit Divine Connections’ website at http://www.divineconnectionsslu.com

There is a lot of talent in St. Lucia and when I talk with young people I feel more confident that there is hope. There must be a shift in the strategy currently applied to create employment. A substantial amount of money must be placed at the disposal of Entrepreneurs with new ideas. The MSME sector must be supported as a top priority at this time. It is time that the support given to the traditional sectors such as tourism and agriculture be extended to MSMEs. There is no better alternative to providing jobs. It is necessary to create an environment that will advance entrepreneurship. A way must be found to translate talk into action.

The financial woes are closing in and decisive action must be taken to lessen the shocks. Over the years, a lot of programmes were initiated but when the time for implementation came the ideas vanished. On other occasions just token responses were given. As a Past President of SLISBA lamented – “they give you money to fail”. The amount of money granted for any project must be adequate. If not the project is doomed to fail from day one. This is a reality that must be dealt with as too many good businesses have failed because of a lack of additional working capital that was not forthcoming from the banks, even when the borrower’s security could have accommodated such request. The time has come for new ways to be found for meeting the business challenges that confront Entrepreneurs. No one should expect a different result when doing the same thing over and over. The established result will not change. You have to do it differently. This seems to be the expectation from MSMEs that without the input of money they will grow and prosper and be creative in their approaches. It is time that MSMEs be put on the front burner for receiving Government’s assistance. There must be a strong case made to international agencies on behalf of MSMEs.

Hereunder is my selected motivational piece of the week.
LIFE RESPONDS TO YOUR OUTLOOK.
Life is largely a matter of expectation.
You must expect to succeed, if you want to succeed.
When you expect things to happen, strangely enough, they do happen.
Expectation energizes your goals and gives them momentum.
When you believe something good can happen, it will happen.
Set your goals high.
If you begin with some wild expectations you’ll succeed beyond
your wildest expectations.
The dreams you believe in come to be.
