HAITI, US SENATE RACE – LESSONS TO BE LEARNT!

The month of January has so far delivered a few wake up calls. Firstly, it was the destruction of the Capital of Haiti – Port Au Prince and then the loss of the Massachusetts Democratic Senate seat, just one day after the completion of President Obama’s first year in office. There are fundamental lessons to be learnt from the experiences.

In the case of Haiti, unplanned development fueled by high level of poverty was primarily responsible for the destruction of buildings and infrastructure. The need for Safe Houses/Storage to store equipment and basic food items in easily accessible parts of communities must be given consideration in every country. We saw people digging to reach persons trapped with their bare hands. The length of time it took to reach displaced persons with water and food was too long. The best minds can make bad decisions. Air Drop was the immediate solution to getting supplies to the people; it took days for the decision makers on the ground to take that decision. It makes the points that DISASTER PLANNING MUST BE A CONTINUOUS PROCESS with no place for complacency.

I am very pleased with the role of the US major news networks regarding the Haiti disaster. The world has responded. CNN has been outstanding. There is need for our TV stations to take a lead from their counterpart and deliver more information on what is happening in communities. In many instances if the story is known, assistance will be forthcoming especially those related to dealing with poverty.

I am beginning to be concerned about President Obama’s strategists, campaign and otherwise. The fact that the Health Care Bill is rejected by 51% of Americans is cause for concern. Will this be yet another missed opportunity by the Democrats to secure Health Care Reform under their administration? The Republican Candidate won by citing Health Care as a financial burden on the backs of the citizens of the USA. How could a major thrust of the administration be so widely discredited? The loss in a State where Senator Ted Kennedy, one of the outstanding members of the Senate, served for 47 years is definitely a wake up call which necessitates a game change. I believe that the Democrats didn’t think they had to fight for the seat. Being over confident is not position to take in politics. The race is only won at the finishing line.

Give the people what they want. In these times, there are two things on the people’s minds – THE ECONOMY AND JOBS!!! The two are inter-related. Fix the economy and confidence will be restored – jobs will open up. This is true for every country. There should have been budgetary action – Emergency Budgets to fix the economy. Our economies in the region are budget driven and since the crisis became apparent there should have been re focusing of priorities to produce the stimulus necessary to feed the economy.

In recent weeks I have been bombarded with information on world developments especially in the USA. I actively participate in webinars, look at video presentations and invest in programmes. On the 21/01/2010 the Real Estate industry will never be the same, technology will be introduced to give Realtors a better opportunity to achieve success in their business. Check out the buzz at www.freedomsoft.com I participated in the VIP Sneak preview to launch this project. It is awesome.
