SAINT LUCIAN PUBLISHED AUTHORS SHOWCASE

THEIR WORK AT THE CITY HALL, DECEMBER 14 – 17, 2010!

The reading public will be in for a treat as local published Authors showcase their work at the Castries City Council Auditorium from December 14 to 17. Opening hours – 9.00 am to 6.00 pm. The show is endorsed by the St. Lucia Writers’ Forum and the organizers are receiving full cooperation from the Executive Committee and general membership.

The event is scheduled to begin the day after National Day holiday which signals a continuation of the observance as we celebrate with our Writers their achievements. The show will bring together well established and emerging Authors from all over the country. I am certain that the challenges that the fraternity faces will be discussed at length over the 4 days. It is interesting to note that Dr. Anthony Felicien, Education Officer – Curricular will deliver the Keynote Address at the opening ceremony scheduled for 10.00 am on Tuesday 14th December. Writers continue to express the need for closer collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Culture and it is expected that the show will open up an opportunity for dialogue with officials of the Ministry.

There is a very interesting possibility of a linkage between Writers and the tourism sector. Every time that a book is written by a St. Lucian Author, it is another opportunity where St. Lucia is promoted. There should be opportunities for officials in the sector and St. Lucian Authors to collaborate in promotional activities. The current economic situation in the country will demand that we do more with less and mobilising local Writers could be one way to a Win Win situation in respect of the promotion of tourism.

Looking ahead this show will challenge all persons with a story to tell to seek out opportunities to publish their books. There is a lot of talent in our midst and I see a great future for writers who will JUST DO IT – write a manuscript. With the introduction of Digital Books, publishing has become inexpensive. There are many approaches that can be taken by Writers. There is a very interesting offer from a publisher which puts your manuscript on line within 48 hours at no charge. There is also a major breakthrough that is being talked about that will definitely put writers in the driver’s seat. Technology is the driver of the future and the publishing industry is a major beneficiary.

Amazon.com, apart from offering PDF eBooks, now offers Kindle version which is the latest addition to the digital delivery of books. Exciting times are ahead for persons already in the industry and those seeking to get on board.

There is need for dialogue among writers and every opportunity to get together and learn from each other should be welcomed. Published Authors who have not made contact with the organizers and are desirous of participating in the show are encouraged to do so as soon as possible.

In spite of the obvious problems, St. Lucians are defying all odds in ensuring that the Holiday Season is not postponed but enjoyed. I am heartened by the cheerfulness of our people. The clouds will soon roll by and confidence will be restored once again. In the meantime, it is necessary for each of us to play our part. There is a lot of work yet to be undertaken and it needs all hands on deck. This was my headline two issues ago and it remains constantly on my mind. We have an opportunity for our people to come together to chart a way forward that will put our country back on track in the shortest possible time.

I look forward to welcoming you at the Gift and Book Show. Let us make this Christmas one with a difference where our gifts will be lasting. Include a book among the gifts this Christmas, be a source of enlightenment. Remember Readers are Leaders. Make a commitment to read a minimum of one book per month and witness how you will feel so much better about yourself. You would have accomplished something. Make it one of your New Year resolutions.

The Christmas parties will begin to swing from this weekend – go out and enjoy!

Keep the Faith, God is in Charge, Dream Big and expect Daily Miracles!
