COVID 19 Update:
While everyone anxiously awaits the release of the vaccines, the pandemic rages on. Everywhere, governments are grappling with the situation while the citizens are defying the recommendations of the scientists. Until the vaccines are released for use, it will take the full cooperation of governments and citizens to get the virus under control. There must be a united call and definite adherence to the protocols, principal among which is the wearing of masks. The established protocols as exist up to this time are, washing hands, wearing masks, and social distancing among other specific instructions. In the early stages, these protocols worked for us. However, after 8 months the people are tired and seek freedom.
There is resistance to the adherence to the protocols due to the stressful situation the imposition of the protocols, and everyone seeks to break free. Just this past week the U.S.A. celebrated Thanksgiving. Americans couldn’t hold themselves back. They traveled by land and air, in spite of the call to stay at home. The airports were filled with persons seeking to celebrate with family and friends in other States. It seems insane but it is real. People are taking chances, only looking for an opportunity to exhale whether it is attending political rallies, visiting relatives for the holidays or generally taking advantage of any opportunity to feel free.
The Christmas holiday season is almost upon us and air travel will once again be at its peak. The airports are going to be filled with people trying to visit family and friends. Sometimes, I wonder if the statistics in relation to COVID 19 means nothing to those who have so far been saved from the virus. I noted in an article that air travel for Thanksgiving returned to pre March 2020 period. The United States has recorded 13 Million cases and 265 thousand deaths. Hospitals are filling up fast, beds are running out. COVID 19 hospitalised patients are now in excess of 90 thousand.
Here in Saint Lucia, the number of cases stands at 252 with 2 deaths. The Prime Minister has called on the Leader of the Opposition to join in the fight against COVID 19. We cannot follow in the footsteps of the USA where President Trump is heading in one direction and the scientists are heading in another. St. Lucia cannot afford such a situation, both Government and Citizens must come together to fight this virus. In the meantime, St. Lucia has extended its protocols for another 2 weeks, ending December 14, 2020.
England is on lockdown, Canada seeking to close its doors. Toronto has begun a 4-week lockdown. COVID 19 is not going away my friends.
Around the Caribbean:
1. Guyana is Booming! Foreign Direct Investments are pouring in. Border Governments of Suriname and Brazil are talking about collaboration, granting access to their individual countries and touting economic advancements.
2. Liat takes to the skies this week and has begun flying from Antigua to other OECS States and Barbados.
3. President Maduro of Venezuela is seeking an audience with Prime Minister Keith Rowley of Trinidad and Tobago to discuss matters of mutual concerns.
4. Belize new Prime Minister was tested positive with COVID 19 as the country records the highest number of cases (10) in a week throughout the region..
5. Antigua Minister of Education charged and resigned.
6. CARICOM places a temporary ban on poultry from the UK.
7. Barbados celebrates its 54th Anniversary of Independence while Suriname celebrates its 45th.
8. Jamaica PM appeals for Diaspora to avoid unnecessary travel during Christmas.
9. Western Union closed 407 locations in Cuba after more than 20 years.
10. Caribbean Airlines Ltd. is taking on additional routes as it resumes flights in the region and beyond, adding Jamaica to Miami.
11. All CARICOM States are grappling with the COVID 19 pandemic.
Political Update in the U.S.A.:
President Trump continues to hold out on conceding that he has lost the elections to President-Elect Joe Biden. However, in the past week, the General Services Administration (GSA) has approved the transition funding and Officials on both sides are in dialogue. President-Elect – Joe Biden is moving ahead with the nomination of leading members to his administration. The process in relation to confirmation of certain key positions will commence after the inauguration scheduled for 20th January 2021, with hearings in the Senate. It is important to note that the COVID 19 Task Force is working and receiving the necessary information to ensure effective distribution of the vaccines when they become available.
The challenge ahead for the Joe Biden administration is daunting. Already voices of dissatisfaction with the nominations, (not enough people of colour named) have begun to rise to the surface but it is early days and hopefully, it may not be a major problem. Major nominations will be made this week and a better picture may evolve. You would have noted that Senators have not been nominated to any position so far as the risk might be too great to expose the Democrats to further elections at this time. The two seats in Georgia seems to be enough a challenge to deal with at this juncture.
The court battles are fading away as President Trump’s false claims of voter fraud are being dismissed one after another.
The eyes of the world are upon the USA. There is a feeling that The Donald will pull off a December surprise. These are anxious moments for the people of the USA. Let us continue to pray for a favourable outcome.
