PRESS RELEASE

Guyanese nationals resident in St Lucia celebrated the 33rd Republic Anniversary of Guyana at a well attended and organized function hosted at the Indies Conference Center on the evening of Tuesday 25th February 2003. The activity was organized by the Guyana St Lucia Association and featured former Attorney General of St Lucia Mrs Lorraine Williams as the Guest Speaker. Mrs Williams focused on the history and closeness of Guyana- St Lucia relations and urged the Guyanese to continue to be a vibrant part of the St Lucian landscape. She noted that Guyana has produced many outstanding personalities who have impacted on St Lucia and the Caribbean and they need to be proud of their identity. She urged them to continue to build on their achievements as residents of St Lucia and support the work of their Association.

A highlight of the evening was a very well presented Awards Presentation at which three (3) outstanding Guyanese nationals were recognized for their achievements and contribution to St Lucian society in the areas of business, education and academic excellence. The recipient of awards were:

Mr Ronald Ramjattan – Managing Director of Baron Foods Ltd for excellence in business and service to community.

Dr Henry Hinds – a distinguished scholar and educator who has been served in the field of education for over forty years. He is currently the Head of the OECS Education Reform Unit located at the Morne, Castries.

Indira Deonandan – the top student of the Choiseul Secondary School at the 2002 CXC Exams gaining Grade Ones in Eight Subjects with Seven Distinctions. Currently a first year student of the Vieux Fort Comprehensive Secondary School A Level Department where she is the ONLY student doing five (5) A Level subjects and one (1) CAPE subject as her course of study.

The evening was punctuated with good humour and rendering of folk songs.
