Conferences, Workshops, Meetings, Negotiations and every aspect of dialogue at all levels are very much a part of the daily schedule of business persons and professionals. However, it is necessary that leaders provide an all embracing environment that will open up the dialogue and encourage new ideas. Sometimes it is difficult to identify how the views of persons in the southern and western part of the island merge into the national discourse; the relationship between local and central government, and the role of citizens in the overall national planning to bring about changes in the communities are not clearly defined.

The nation is currently grappling with the global economic situation which is impacting negatively on the local economy. National leaders should be on a crusade for new ideas. In recent years the government of the day invites contribution from various associations to input into the budget. This year the government has scheduled a meeting with leaders in all sectors of the economy to discuss the current situation and to source ideas that will ease the economic squeeze.

The 2009/2010 Budget is one of the most anticipated budgets as it is expected to give clear indications as to the direction of the country – where the allocations will be placed. Expansion of the small business sectors will be at the heart of the debate. Job creation will be vital in keeping the economy at a level that will keep businesses alive.

The St. Lucia Private Sector Council should be given a real chance to serve the purpose for which it was intended. How can Associations call upon their membership to come together when the Associations fail to come together and network to get the best ideas to move the country forward. The individual approach cannot work in today’s economic environment. Individuals who have ideas to bring to the table must be given an opportunity to ventilate them. While on the one hand there is the feeling that there is agreement in getting everyone with an idea to make a contribution, on the other hand there is the resistance by many who are placed in positions to make such a process possible are not opening up.
Leadership is necessary to open up the new opportunities in innovation and technology. Who is really driving this process? There is need for Secretariat that will drive the process. The effective use of the internet in business is yet to be developed to an acceptable level. The point was made by a presenter at a recent workshop that unless your business is on the internet, you do not have a business. It is very clear to me – if your business in the Services Sector targets the global market, your export trust will be very restricted.

Social networking can generate a very strong demand for services in the tourism sector. It is time that the tourism industry begins to embrace local people who are prepared to promote St. Lucia as a destination. Tourism Officials should begin to look inward and develop campaigns for local internet warriors to promote St. Lucia!

My social interaction on www.twitter.com/saintlucian has been turning up some interesting responses. I invite you to follow me and let us start promoting St. Lucia so that visitors will select St. Lucia and our family and friends will continue to earn a living in the tourism sector.

Hereunder is my motivational pick of the week.
You’re the master of your fate and the captain of your soul.
While your character is formed by circumstances,
your own desires can do much to shape those circumstances.
Thus, you have the power over the formation of your own character.
Nature is always at work around you.
Your character and destiny are her handiwork.
She gives you love and hate, jealousy and reverence.
You have the power to choose which impulse you will follow.
You can at any time decide to alter the course of your life.
No one can ever take that away from you.
The greatest power you possess is the power to choose.
You’re the master of your joys and your sorrows.
