THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT IS ALIVE BUT NEEDS TO BE NOURISHED!!!

THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT IS ALIVE BUT NEEDS TO BE NOURISHED!!!

There is so much happening in our midst at the moment. Looking at the business environment, things seem to be leveling off and the promise of great end of year, with the tourism sector shows signs of great improvement in arrivals for the winter season. Don’t be complacent, the projected increase in arrivals is coming at a price – substantial discounts as much as 60%. Professionals in the industry hasten to predict that next year numbers will go down. But like usual we are always optimistic about our lead industry and something is always turning up to make a difference and inject a bit of confidence in the future.

In the meantime, bars and restaurants are moving full steam ahead, Rodney Bay Village is now at capacity, all available buildings are occupied. Gros Islet is expanding while the improvements on the waterfront are being anxiously awaited. It is easy to look at the many new businesses being established and conclude that the spirit of Entrepreneurship is alive and well in St. Lucia but there could be problems ahead. Given the size of our island there is a limit to the amount of businesses that can be sustained at a viable level. The operators of Bars and Restaurants in the North will benefit from the projected increased tourist arrivals as prices are on the rise in many bars and food prices have remained steady. This sub sector should be positive as long as an increase in visitor arrivals is achieved.

I believe it is time for business persons to expand offshore. In the context of the Caricom Region, Guyana is the destination – Eldorado is reality! Gold production is up many local miners are doing extremely well when the price is at its highest in years. I failed to include in my last article the websites that provide information on investing in Guyana. Check out the details at: http://www.mintic.gov.gy and http://www.goinvest.gov.gy Guyana is open for business in every sector.

The recent movement in the price of oil should be of concern to many and it can only be hoped that it does not reach US$100.00 by December 31, 2009. It was hoped that given the state of the economy everywhere, oil would have closed at US$70.00 per barrel at year end. It is currently a little over US$80.00, I hope that there will be no further upward movement. When the oil price began its upward movement to U$140.00 on the last occasion, it was in the last quarter that the price took its toll. Let us pray that the same situation does not arise this time.

Every time I hear on the news about the importance of the small business sector to the US economy and its impact on employment providing as much as 50% of all jobs, I wonder what is being done to provide stimulus to the MSME sector so that it can consolidate if not expand. While on the surface we get the impression that everything is fine in the sector, unless something is done urgently, the sector will decline as many small businesses will be wiped out and the sector will become less attractive to new entrants. The Spirit of Entrepreneurship needs to be nourished.

Hereunder is my selected motivational piece of the week.
SUCCESS IS A DETERMINED ACTION AWAY
Foolish people with all their other thoughts, have this one too.
They are always getting ready to live, but never living.
Your success will start when you begin to pursue it.
To reach your goal or to attain success, you don’t need to know
all the answers in advance.
You just need to have a clear idea of what your goal is.

Don’t procrastinate when faced with difficult problems
Break your problems into parts, and handle one part at a time.
Develop tendencies toward taking action.
You can make something happen right now.
Divide your big plan into small steps and take that first step right away,
Everyone who got where they are had to begin where they were.
Your big opportunity is where you are right now.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Take it.
