IF CASH IS TIGHT – WHY NOT TRY BARTERING???

I did a fair bit of walking during this week and met with several persons who exchanged greetings and went on to discuss my forever optimistic view about the future. I cannot help but being who I am. My faith is rooted in knowing that I am a child of the King and further that I am not a Christian, I am an Elect! Throughout my adult life I subscribed to the principle of Affirmation and read great books such as Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, etc. However that discussion is for another time.

Almost everything I proposed in my column over the years has come to pass. I did not only speak about prosperity, I drew attention to the dangers of failing to give back to the community and the possibility of those who are in a position to do so and continue to ignore the consequences will reap the outcome that neglect causes. Today, the youngsters are on a rampage. We hear about the high daylight burglary to homes and businesses. My archive
( www.stluciasimplybeautiful.com ) vindicates me of any pie in the sky writing and will prove that over the years I offered several ideas that will deal with many of the negative issues that confront our nation today.

My challenge over the years and continues to be – is not to dwell on problems but point to solutions. In the area of business I point to ideas that are yet to be introduced in St. Lucia. I did several stories on Bartering but I am yet to get any takers. Every private sector association will allude to the fact that their members have serious cash flow problems and that the banks are tight. Not one of the associations is talking about Bartering which can free up many of their members cash flow. It is time for some individual or association to introduce Bartering to St. Lucia. It is a business that its time has come.

Bartering can expand your customer base; it saves cash for payments that can only be made in cash. In times of economic hardship, many micro and small businesses find themselves cash poor but they can get many of their goods and services from Bartering. Don’t wait on an organization to begin the process seek out persons/businesses that need your goods or services and they need yours to do some exchanges to ease the squeeze. By the time an institution is established, Bartering would have become a part of our business culture. It is recommended that a business could safely trade up to 20 percent of its sales.

There is something about Bartering that has attracted me in recent times, it is the simplicity of its application and the financial relief it can bring to the minds of business owners. Media Houses can move a great deal of advertising through the Bartering system. Once the period is past, it is gone forever; it is the same with hotel rooms. Hotels should be planning to barter some rooms to companies to be given to their staff as incentives.

There are two businesses that are waiting to be properly introduced to consumers – USED FURNITURE & APPLIANCES STORE and USED APPAREL STORE. There are many other specialized stores that could be established. There is no better time than now! Get in front of the wave.

I had a discussion with a young Entrepreneur recently and I remarked to him that he was starting out his business at a difficult time. His response was very interesting but I was not surprised because I share his position totally. He said that any investor with an idea that is new and has done his homework by testing the demand for his product or service has nothing to fear. His company is Transcom which provides advertising, audio and video entertainment on public buses. This is achieved by installing a 15” LCD screen inside the roof of Toyota Grand Ace buses.

I am convinced that there are lots of great ideas out there waiting to be implemented. It will take a lead institution to bring the persons with the ideas together and put the necessary capital to support the ventures. Let’s do it!

Hereunder is my selected motivational piece of the week.
Look At Things As They Can Be
Your range of available choices right now has no limits.
The only limits you have are in your mind.
You’ve got it in you to succeed.
Just make up your mind and stick with it.
You weren’t born with any limits on your powers or any set limits to your capacity.
At any moment, you have more possibilities than you can act upon.
Imagine your possibilities and your vision expands.
Capture your dreams in your mind and your life becomes full.
Reach out and touch the limits of your being in your mind.
If you think you can, you can.
