WELCOME TO THE YEAR 2023!

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re doing something.” —Neil Gaiman

I wish my readers everywhere, a Healthy, Happy, and Prosperous New Year! It is great to be in the land of the living as we welcome 2023 which I see as a year of RENEWAL. It should be noted that the year began on a Sunday which is the first day of the week. Things are aligned for great progress in 2023. No matter whatever scars the challenges of last year have left, it is time to leave your troubles behind and dance. The year 2023 will be the type of year, you want it to be. The year 2022 is gone and there is no hope in living in the past. It is time to move on; it is time for renewal.

Last week, I introduced two words that need to be kept in your mind – Flexibility and Adjustment. Flexibility to ensure that you are willing to change your mind set in an effort to change your life and stop doing the same thing, year after year, expecting a different result which is a state of insanity. You have to be prepared to do whatever it takes to bring about the change you need in your life. Change your mindset – change your life.

The other word is Adjustment. Inflation has placed an economic strain upon our people, more so upon the poor among us. It will be necessary to cut your coat according to your cloth. Budgeting will not only be a word for accountants but even the labourer. Lay out your expenses and fit your income into them. I call this the block a hole system and it will apply especially to those persons who do not have guaranteed incomes, such as salaries. At one time the phrase paradigm shift was trending. These are shifting times. It is amazing how buzzwords quickly fade away. Buzzwords and phrases are intended to capture your imagination and get you to take action.

This New Year, everything should be done to reduce the incidents of crime in the world. At one time, we thought crime couldn’t happen in our communities. Today, crime is happening everywhere. Every related discipline is trying to find answers. However, a real solution continues to elude them. Story telling is one way to help curb crime. Community concerts and plays in the parks and playing fields around St. Lucia should be introduced to soothe minds and dramatise the ills of crime. The various pantomime and concerts should be aired on Radio and Television. This type of programme must not be only introduced to those who are fortunate to keep themselves outside of the prison walls but should also be introduced in the prison. I share the statement that a mind is a terrible thing to waste, and I am convinced that life transforming programmes should be introduced in the prisons, including practical business training. I am ready to volunteer.

Let us focus on the good that can be realised in 2023. It is easy to find the bad things in society while neglecting to recognise the good things all around us. In taking the leap of faith to make 2023 a year of RENEWAL, we must place at the centre of our minds, the necessity to care for the less fortunate, and share whatever is placed upon our hearts to get involved with, even if it is the distribution of Bible Tracts. Let us make a deliberate effort to bring joy to those around us, and where there is JOY, there is PEACE!

Let us pray that this year will be our best ever and that the Renewal we plan in our lives will be realised. Let us play our part. Stay safe, stay healthy, and be blessed. The best is yet to come.
