CASTRIES, Saint Lucia (December 10, 2009) – A broadcasting legend with journalists from St. Lucia, Puerto Rico and New York were recognized for their outstanding contributions to sustainable tourism development in the Caribbean.
The Caribbean Media Exchange on Sustainable Tourism (CMEx) announced its winners at an awards dinner at Sandals Grande St. Lucian Spa and Beach Resort on Sunday night.
Journalism Excellence Awards went to Zodet Negrón of the Puerto Rico Daily Sun, Guyanese-American Colin Moore of the New York-based Caribbean-American Weekly; while Carmy Joseph of Helen Television System in St. Lucia received the Emerging Journalist Award.
Renowned pioneer of environmental television programming, Barbara Pyle, who served as Corporate Vice President of Environmental Policy for the Turner Broadcasting System and CNN’s Environment Editor, received the first CMEx Exemplar Award.
Throughout her extensive career as executive producer and director, she created the popular 113-episode animated series, Captain Planet and the Planeteers and 55 films covering a range of global issues, which have garnered almost 200 industry awards and eight Emmy nominations. Among them is People Count, a 35-part television series which focuses on remarkable individuals leading the way to create a better future.
In 1997, Pyle received the world’s most prestigious environmental honour, the United Nations Environment Programme Sasakawa Prize and used the award to establish the Barbara Pyle Foundation. She also founded and directed the Captain Planet Foundation, which provides grants for hands-on environmental projects involving children.
The journalism and exemplar awards were designed by Stephen Paul’s Photographic Images in St. Lucia.
