JOY COMETH IN THE MORNING
St. Lucia is inextricably linked to the economic and social fortunes of the United States of America. This week Canada and the United Kingdom went on lock down in an effort to control the surge of the third wave of the COVID 19 pandemic. However, it must be noted that in spite of St. Lucia being ranked at Level 4 by the CDC for COVID 19, aircrafts are still flying, and tourists, investors, and St. Lucians are still arriving from the USA.
President Donald Trump principal objective was to make America Great Again! He did very little in that regard. In looking back, after his four years in office,  there is very little he and his followers could be proud of. He was referred to as the Disruptor. The highlight of his legacy was visible to the world on January 6, 2021 when the Capitol was stormed by his followers. Many of the actions he took had to be rolled back by President Joe Biden to ensure that America is governed humanely at home and be an example to the world based on Democratic principles.
Upon assuming office, he moved to tackle the COVID 19 pandemic, challenging the Health services to deliver 100 million vaccines into the arms of Americans. Apart from the numerous Presidential Executive Orders that he has signed, he immediately moved to get financial assistance in the hands of the most vulnerable persons regardless of their political affiliation. Both Democrats and Republicans benefitted.
What I am most excited about is the makeup of President Biden’s cabinet. The Cabinet Secretaries are truly representative of the diversity of the races of the United States of America, who are eminently qualified to undertake their functions. Unlike his predecessor President Trump’s cabinet which lacked racial diversity and a proven track record of performance by those whom he appointed.
January 20th, 2021 signaled an important milestone with the inauguration of Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. as the 46th President of the United States of America. The entire process from his announcement that he was running for President to the day he entered the white house, and sat at his desk in the oval office was ordained by God. God came to the rescue of the world, where America will once again present an orderly and gracious approach to doing business with other leaders around the world. In spite, the world is very different today, with many rogue states and outright dictators at the helm of government in many countries, the United States of America, with the gentle charm of President Biden and his dedicated team will do everything in their power to coalesce among the leaders of the world. Today, there are signs that give hope. The machinery of government is working, professionals at all levels are doing their jobs uninterrupted by presidential interference. The communication department is properly staffed and news correspondents can go about their profession with pride.
A new day has dawned for America. The two branches of government, although the Democrats have very slim majorities have demonstrated their ability to navigate the process and produce results, as in the case of the 1.9 trillion dollar American Rescue Act. The Filibuster is currently posing some difficulty in the US Senate as President Biden seeks reconciliation wherever possible, although he is not prepared to lose sight of his agenda, especially the promises he made to the electorate. The next Bill to be presented to the Senate will be the Infrastructure Bill. However, there is an urgency for the legislative branch to act now on Race Relations, Gun Control, and Policing which may see the latter emerging at the top of the agenda in a few days.
The victory in the courts just a few days ago in the George Floyd matter where convictions were awarded on all three counts has set into motion a process that will promote justice for all Americans regardless of race, colour or creed. The Black Lives Matter movement in a short period has changed the whole approach to race relations in America. It is important to note that Black Lives Matter embraced all races. All races reached out. Their actions demonstrated that it was not about race, it was about a principle that all men are equal. Joy came on the morning of the 20th of April, 2021when the jurors who deliberated for just under eleven hours returned a verdict of GUILTY on all three counts. Derek Chauvin is now awaiting sentencing. JUSTICE prevailed. Congratulations to all those who participated in the process that brought truth to the fore and secured a victory for the family of George Floyd and the people of the United States of America. May the soul of George Floyd rest in peace. He did not die in vain.
In a few days, President Joe Biden will observe 100 days in office. We can be assured from his early actions that DEMOCRACY is once again in safe hands. Let us continue to cheer him and his team on, as they seek to serve the people of the United States of America with dignity.
We have every reason to keep the faith, knowing that God is in charge and all things will work together for good to those who trust in him. Greater things are about to be bestowed upon us. Stay safe!
