IN LIFE & BUSINESS YOU NEVER GET WHAT YOU DESERVE –
YOU ONLY GET WHAT YOU NEGOTIATE!!!

Life is all about negotiation, it is necessary for you to negotiate your way through life. Many people have failed to recognize this truth and apply it, and as a result have suffered the consequences. You only get what you negotiate for. To do otherwise is to leave your destiny in the hands of someone else. Too many people fall into this category. To world could be a better place if more people do the things which they are supposed to do, rather than leaving them to someone else. If you believe you deserve it, go for it. There are many times people are going to attempt to block your progress but there is always a way if you’re determined to achieve your goal.

I remember the days when I played Monopoly, then it was just a game but now I see a bigger picture. It was a means of training the mind to access values and set the ground work for the players to be knowledgeable about real estate. How many of us fifty and over remember an adult speaking to us about the need to translate that experience into a business setting so that the lessons learned could be applied later in their lives. For most of us, it was just a game. As I write this article it dawned on me that maybe, just maybe, it is time for someone to come up a series of game boards based on negotiating.

There is a lot of talk about preparing our young people for the challenges of life. Education is seen as the vehicle for ensuring success in life but I strongly contend that there is need for supplementing education with life skills. I once read a book -What Harvard Doesn’t Teach. It was all about street smarts. The world of hard knocks. Our young people need to build their lives on a system that promotes the right mental attitude supported by a holistic approach which brings into focus the workings of the mind.

To begin the process, there is need for a series of motivational lectures targeted to the young people across the country. If I can, you can! Teach them goal setting. Get them involved in setting small goals, achieving them and setting greater ones and achieving them. Give them an opportunity to experience a series of successes. The first task is to get the people of the country motivated. Give them hope. The city, town and village community centres must open their doors to such programmes. Libraries must begin to make available motivational books to their members. Let us all get passionate about the success of St. Lucia. This process begins with each of us, because it is only when the people are successful that the country is successful.

A survey needs to be undertaken of successful businesspersons in St. Lucia. It will be a great exercise for such a survey to be extended around the region. If business is the source of providing the revenue for the Government to meet its financial obligations, then it is necessary for us to develop a serious business culture. In meeting the needs of the entire nation for that special breed of young people, appreciation for business will be vital. This will guarantee that in whatever position they find themselves in the world of work they will appreciate the value of Entrepreneurship to the society.

It is time someone produces a Who’s Who Publication in St. Lucia as a mark of honouring the people who have contributed to success of the country. I recall that on the occasion of the Awards Dinner held by the Ministry of Commerce to honour three successful Entrepreneurs, Sir J. Q. Charles (posthumously) Mr. Elwin Marcellin and Mr. Arnott Valmont, I called for the success of those being honoured to be recorded in print for distribution to the nation and the wider world. We need to share the experiences of our successful sons and daughters of St. Lucia.

There is also the need for mentoring programmes. After the successful staging of the recently concluded CWC 2007 matches in St. Lucia, it is time that we capture the spirit of volunteerism and reach out to our young people. We need to give back to the society which moulded us. Let us share our lives with others and leave a legacy that will be honoured for many years after we have moved on to higher service. Step out to help our youth and in the end the benefits will redound to the nation.

You never get what you deserve, you only get what you negotiate. Who is going to negotiate on behalf of the youth in our midst?

Keep the Faith, God is in Charge, Expect Miracles in 2007!
