JEANNINE COMPTON – RAMBALLY WINS MICOUD NORTH BY – ELECTION A SOLID VICTORY FOR THE UNITED WORKERS PARTY (UWP)

I am in Barbados attending a Workshop on Corporate Social responsibility for Small and Medium Enterprises and as a result I missed the opportunity to observe the by-election which was held on Monday, November 26, 2007. However, as soon as the results were known I received a phone call which revealed that supporters of the UWP closed ranks to deliver the constituency to their Candidate who was chosen at the run off. The SLP failed to prove its point that the Government was not living up to expectations. A win for the SLP would have confirmed that position. I did mention in my last article that I could not see how the level respect shown to the late Sir John Compton at his passing would have been washed away in three shot months. The outpouring of sympathy for the family and grief at the loss of the Father of the Nation could have only guaranteed an election victory for his daughter.

Jeannine Compton-Rambally is a formidable young professional. As a Marine Biologist, she is no ordinary woman. That profession calls for a degree of bravery and determination. Most important she had to learn to deal with the ordinary people including fishermen. It is not simply a desk job, it carries risk as the need arises from time to time to brave the waters of the sea and investigate what is happening to the various species of fishes and mammals under the sea. The first time I met her was at a Whaling Conference and she was very confident in her contributions.

A loss for the UWP would have shaken the UWP and invite all kinds of speculations but once again it was not to be. By – Elections in UWP strongholds have not favoured the SLP and they will have to rethink their strategy. Once again, it might have been better to sit out the election and continue to carry on their campaign of being the voice of the Opposition.

That’s enough for politics, life goes on and it is important to note that Tourism is doing well. There has’nt been so many cruise ships in our harbours for a long time. While I don’t have the figures, I feel that given the size of the vessels, a record number of cruise passengers will grace our shores. The taxi drivers are in for a great season. Senator, Hon. Allen Chastanet, Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation is getting a hold on the airlift problem. Stay over visitors from the USA and other contributing markets is also be expected to be high.

The City of Castries is being given a face lift and beginning to look like a city. The City Council needs to keep at it and give Castries the attention it needs. A number of buildings are going up in the city. A City renewal programme should be initiated. Investment Conferences are a new feature in promoting St. Lucia. There is a quiet storm and while there is claim that nothing is happening, a few projects are emerging. There is to be an upgrade to the Rodney Bay Marina to the tune of fifty million US dollars.

The negative publicity that plagued the administration in he early months have subsided and it is now for the parliamentarians on the government side to do what they were elected to do. It would be interesting to read the Prime Minister’s report to the nation on the first year of the UWP administration in office. The year 2008 holds great promise for St. Lucia and it is time for all parliamentarians to come together and work for the good of the country.

The only way to make life comfortable for the working class is to attract investments into the country that will create jobs. At least two persons in every household with persons of working age should be working. At the rate cost of living is rising, the emphasis will have to move from increased wages to additional jobs being made available. Persons in the lower and middle income brackets will have to begin to do at home what they do in the USA and Canada, and work at two or more jobs. A few days ago, I got a call from a young lady who lives in the USA and in our discussion, she mentioned that she has five jobs. I am still working out in my mind if she has to report daily to places of work, how many hours per day, how many days per week, etc.. I was speechless when I heard the number of jobs she has.

St. Lucia is now ready to take the step to the next level where we will have to move away from the old ways of doing things and take decisions to modernize the country, especially the City of Castries. Shopping must be extended to 6.00pm and businesses must be opened on weekends.

The Diaspora must find ways of getting involved in the development at home. I have alluded to this in previous articles and I will dedicate my next article to how the Diaspora can contribute.

In the meantime, Keep the Faith, God is Charge, Dream Big and Expect Miracles in 2007.

You are saying to eat whole wheat tortillas, which are not allowed on the Candida diet! It is so hard to get the right answers most of the time about this condition, but not bieng able to eat wheat is one that everyone agrees on!! If you are going to put a recipe online, that is great, but don’t mislead people to thinking they can eat things they can’t!!

I do believe all the concepts you have presented to your post. They’re very convincing and can definitely work. Still, the posts are too brief for newbies. May you please prolong them a bit from next time? Thanks for the post.
