LEADERSHIP IS VITAL FOR MSMEs TO SUCCEED AND PROSPER!!!
I take pleasure in introducing a new acronym MSME (Micro, Small & Medium Size Enterprise). Micro businesses have been the starting point for many Big Businesses. It takes commitment and being focused to achieve success while establishing Leadership qualities in individuals.
An understanding of Leadership is of great importance if those who are called to lead will deliver on the expectations of those who depend upon their actions. I find the quote hereunder to be very timely and interesting as I am fully convinced that there must be a change of mind set for leaders to meet the challenges of the people who depend upon them. It is no difference in business or in any other aspect of life.
LEADERSHIP IS ACTION NOT POSITION
All successful people became successful because they
gave some talent or ability in the service of others.
You can contribute in some way to others no matter
how small your talent.
You too, can become successful.
No one achieves success without being of service.
The essence of success is service.
Successful people don’t use others, other people
use the successful, for above all success is of service.

The private sector is the driver of the economies of the free world. MSMEs are a vital part of the private sector and produces between 60-80% of the jobs. As a result, governments rely heavily on MSMEs to generate employment and as a result improve the livelihood of citizens. Everyone recites this fact but many are far from it in their actions.
The signs of global growth are all around us, China, India and don’t be fooled, America will always be America – #1. What stands between MSMEs and Big Businesses is the Mind Set of their leaders. If you think you are small and without hope, then you are and will remain that way until you come to the realization that you have the greatest potential to be BIG!
I know what it takes to grow companies from zero and make them into multi million dollar companies. Most of the ingredients to make small businesses large are missing in the Mind Set. It is a strange phenomenon, when most people acquire a business they feel that they know it all. Humility is removed from their vocabulary and their actions. Businesspersons must keep close to the word of the Almighty. Their actions should be guided by the principles of their Holy Word. Too often businesspersons act as though they have replaced their Creator. He that humbles himself shall be exalted. What every businessperson needs is the support of a Master Mind Group and a Personal Business Coach or Life Coach. Depending on the experiences of the Coach, it is possible to engage one Coach for both tasks.
During the past month, I had the pleasure of traveling extensively and looking around at business opportunities and methods of doing business. During my 10 day trip to Trinidad where I attended the 3rd Annual Caribbean Unity Trade Fair I San Fernando I was blessed with the opportunity of listening to the Mayor of San Fernando who delivered the feature address at a Dinner Business Meeting. He spoke passionately about the GOD FACTOR in his business and he ascribes his successes to the Creator. He grew his company from 10 to 450 personnel in 10 years.
This is the time of year when people of goodwill everywhere get together to share love at Christmas, in many instances failing to grasp the deeper meaning. Love must not only be for a season it must be for a lifetime. We must be passionate about caring and sharing as a part of our daily lives. Not just for a day or a brief season but always! It is for this reason that I am so excited about my association with the group of persons responsible for introducing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the region. I am on a crusade to share the good news that CSR will improve the image of businesspersons who will adopt the voluntary standard as it evolves in the region. It will be possible to identify the true Leaders of the private sector and civil society. Social Responsibility is everybody’s business but the driver will always be the private sector.
At the close of my article, I usually conclude with the statement “Keep the Faith, God is in Charge, Expect Miracles in 2007. In recent months, I added Dream Big! I truly believe in this statement and it is delivering for me as it has been for many of my readers. Many of us have received many miracles in 2007. I introduced to you a few years ago the Jabez Prayer. 1. Chronicles, Chapter 4, Verse 10. I am certain those of you who practice the simple system have seen your borders expanded. You no longer worry about many of the things as you did in previous times. It is a great life, little things mean a lot. Believe, Ask and Receive. This is the key to the kingdom. During the past four weeks, I traveled extensively, from Trinidad & Tobago to Phoenix, Arizona. I experienced thunder storms in Trinidad, earthquake in Barbados, Snow storms in the USA and experienced the horrors of air travel. I had the pleasure and scare of being aboard many types of aircrafts including Dash 8, Super 80, 737, 757, 777, and the EMB which is finally assembled and completed in Brazil. The EMB twin engine jet aircraft is used by American Eagle as its Regional Jet in the USA. Its capacity is 44 passengers. Maybe LIAT can use a few of these aircrafts.
My experiences in relation to customer service during my trips have made me proud of the service that is being offered in St. Lucia. No wonder most visitors have fond memories of their holiday experience. I will be first to admit that we can do much more but what passes for customer service at some airports and hotels in the USA leaves a lot to be desired. Most of the short comings seem to stem from inadequate level of staffing. It is only so much that any individual can handle in any given situation. Beyond that point, it is chaos.
I feel privileged to validate many of the recommendations I have made over the years in my column – Edward Harris at Large! Going to visit persons with whom you do business with in their country and place of business can do a lot in laying the foundation for lasting, mutually beneficial relationship. My 12 hour trip to Phoenix, Arizona was richly rewarding. During the one hour interview with the President and National Sales Director of Search Big Daddy, we discussed plans for a launch in the Caribbean in the 1st quarter of 2008. The programme will benefit businesspersons in the region tremendously as they seek to establish a presence on the World Wide Web. I now have a Business Coach who will guide me in achieving my business goals. It is interesting that I have his permission to share my new knowledge with persons interested in applying the system.
It is a Great Life, never be tired of doing good, it comes back to you from unexpected sources. In the meantime, Keep the Faith, God is in Charge, Dream Big and Expect Miracles in 2007.
