IT WAS ANOTHER GLORIOUS NIGHT!!!Â
The Saint Lucia Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture in association with the Office of the Prime Minister has done it once again with the successful hosting of the 2nd St. Lucia Business Awards. The private sector support continues to be outstanding. With excellent programmes like the Business Awards, it is obvious that such events will attract the support of Government. The event was held under the distinguished patronage of Her Excellency the Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy on January 29, 2011at the Sandals Grande St. Lucia Spa & Beach Resort.Â
It was a great night for many business persons as their companies received Awards for outstanding achievements in their categories. It is important to note that Awards are open to any company/individual operating in St. Lucia and not limited to members of the Chamber. Let us begin to look around and nominate those companies/individuals that we perceive to be doing an excellent job. I will like to see some new entrants but I suspect that some companies are afraid of the limelight. It is always a great moment when an individual or a company is recognized for excellence. Â
The 1st National Bank is doing something right and is an outstanding example to micro, medium and small businesses in St. Lucia. It shows that small could be a power force for change and excellence. With every Award the Bank receives, it reaffirms its presence in the economy as a serious player in the industry and a good corporate citizen. The Bank has also taken its corporate social responsibility seriously, supporting important social and cultural programmes. Another interesting Award – Entrepreneur of the Year went to Mr. Rayneau Gajadhar of the RG Group of Companies which includes Construction & Industrial Equipment Ltd. (CIE). The Group has placed great faith in the economy of St. Lucia and continues its expansion programmes in the most difficult economic times. Construction is their business and the company is committed to providing affordable housing in 2011.Â
Things are not getting better even if we claim that the economies of the developed world are experiencing a turn around, and the recession is now behind us, the political unrest in Egypt is not helping the situation as we see the oil sharks taking the price of oil to a new level in excess of US$100.00 per barrel. Are we looking at EC$15.00 per gallon in the new week? The buying power of the dollar is under serious pressure as when oil rises, almost everything else follows. Transportation is one service to watch.Â
There are many aspects of our lives that we will have to revisit. Budgeting was a word for businesses and governments but today it is a major discussion in the home. A few years ago a few people were smart enough to use their calculator to work on savings on sizes of containers as related to price when shopping and to ensure that they can pay for their purchases when they get to the cashier. Those persons by now have a degree in budgeting.Â
All indications are that there is a need for additional sources of income. We have to develop a plan to share money among ourselves. The Americans developed Multilevel Marketing which pays at several levels so that persons associated with a sale gets a piece of the commission pie. MLM does not only apply to vitamins and consumer items, it is also applicable to services. I am waging a battle to get idle hands to get on board the Internet Marketing train. Soldiers are currently being recruited. I had the pleasure on interviewing Miss Keitha Glace, one of St. Lucia’s outstanding Web Developers of Glacegrafix on my show “Let’s Talk Business†which is scheduled to be aired on Wednesday, 9/2/11 at 8.00pm on Channels 42 LIME and 78 Karibcable, and on the internet at www.sluhwtv.com . She has some wise words for our young people. You can visit her website at www.glacegrafix.com and see how she uses technology with all the bells and whistles.Â
