BUSINESS MONTH IN ST LUCIA ENDS ON A HIGH NOTE!!!

 

Several announcements during the month of November have energised the people of St. Lucia and gave them hope for a bright future with many projects in the pipe line and others currently in execution stage. Many indicators speak to the expected increase in business activity on the island and a surge in employment as the New Year dawns.

The Ministry of Commerce in the Office of the Prime Minister can only be proud of Business Month, 2016 Initiatives held during the month of November, 2016.  Many interesting programmes/projects were executed, including Global Entrepreneurship Month – GEW, Saint Lucia – Taiwan 9^th Annual Trade Show, and the Sod Turning Ceremony for the $2.6 billion Pearl of the Caribbean project being promoted by Desert Star Holdings Limited.

Royal Bank of Canada was one of the principal sponsors of GEW 2016 when a number of interesting programmes, including Entrepreneurship Speed Networking were successfully executed. This is the 6^th year of the GEW programme in St. Lucia and with every passing year, it gets better. Youth Entrepreneurship is vital to the future economic progress of the nation.

The 9^th Annual Saint Lucia – Taiwan Trade Show which was held from November 25 – 27 at the Johnson’s Conference Centre, Rodney Bay, Gros Islet was a resounding success. Approximately 60 small business persons participated and displayed some very interesting products and services, such as Rub for Pain, Costume Jewellery, Exotic Fruit Drinks, Seamoss Beverage, Decorative Mirrors, Sofas, Dresses, Organic Liquid Fertiliser, Organic Cleaning Products, Professional Services – Insurance, IT Programmes, Small Business Advisors.  Business Books by Deborah Bowers and Edward Harris were on sale at special show prices which will give purchasers an opportunity to get into business on an informed basis based on the information provided in their books. The team of show organisers headed by Ms. Cindy Eugene of the Ministry of Commerce did a fantastic job and special commendations for their efforts. The show was well supported.

The big moment of the month was on Friday, 25^th November, 2016, His Royal Highness Prince Henry (familiarly known as Prince Harry) of Wales attended the sod turning ceremony for the Royal St. Lucia Turf Club (a race track project) in Vieux Fort situated in the South of the island. It is expected that substantial employment will be generated from the initial component of the $2.6 billion project.

While the year 2016 so far had its fair share of challenges for Entrepreneurs, as we come to the close of the year, there are prospects for a bright holiday season and a brighter and better New Year.

Since my last article as I closed off Business Month 2016, I felt a sense of achievement as I participated in several activities of GEW, and St. Lucia – Taiwan Trade Show where I promoted my book – Winning Strategies for Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises to exhibitors and patrons.  You are invited to visit my website at www.knowledgesharinginstitute.org which was launched on November 25 to coincide with the opening of the Saint Lucia – Taiwan Trade Show. The event presented me with an opportunity to network with fellow Entrepreneurs and visitors.

The South has been involved with a number of activities in the areas of Sports and Entertainment. The most successful season of the Blackheart Football Tournament was in 2016, and to close off the year Youth Fest is scheduled to be held on Sunday, 18^th December, 2016. This is the 14^th year of the Festival. Mr. Omar Davis, Director of Caribbean Youth Fest Limited should be congratulated for his support of the Youth of St. Lucia over the years.
