HELP CONSUMERS WITH THE HIGH COST OF LIVING?†which pointed to the difficult times being experienced by businesses and consumers. I am encouraged but I hasten to make the point that the information I shared with my readers related to the cost of the movement of freight was only possible because someone volunteered it and I packaged it. Rotary, the oldest service organization which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2005 has maintained a presence in St. Lucia for 40 years. There are three Rotary clubs in St. Lucia namely, Rotary Club of St. Lucia, Rotary Club of Gros Islet, both in the North and Rotary Club of St. Lucia South in the South of the island. Over the years, these clubs have sought to bring together businesspersons and professionals with the principal objective of serving their communities. The motto of Rotary is “Service Above Self†I am convinced that there is place for more of these clubs in St. Lucia and as a result more persons who qualify to be members should be given the opportunity to come forward. Even though a person cannot walk off the road and join a Rotary Club, there are creative ways to attract new members.
I attended the Rotary Club of St. Lucia South 31st Anniversary Charter Dinner last Saturday evening which was held at the Coconut Bay Resort in Vieux Fort. Dame Pearlette Louisy, Governor General of Saint Lucia graced the occasion with her presence. Other prominent attendees included Consul General for Saint Lucia to Martinique and the other French Dependencies, Mr. Cassius Elias and Mr. Rick Wayne, Managing Editor of the Star Newspapers. The anniversary programme was well supported by the Presidents and members of the Rotary Clubs of St. Lucia and Gros Islet including the Assistant District Governor, Mr. Tony Austin. I performed the functions of Master of Ceremonies.
In today’s stressful business and professional environment, Rotary could be the answer as an avenue for a diversion from business activities to care and share for the less fortunate.
The members of the Rotary Club of St. Lucia South must be complemented for their invaluable contribution to the community over the 31 years of their existence. While the membership has stayed steady, just at a level to maintain their Charter, the members have brought joy to the hearts of many. The members are optimistic that as the New Frontier unfolds, the club will get into an expansion mode.
As a follow up to my last article in which I noted the plight of consumers who are all affected by the high oil prices, I felt obliged to attend their 2nd Biennial Meeting of the National Consumer Association which was held at the R.C. Boys’ School on Sunday 19/3/06. It was a long day, the meeting commenced at 10.30am and ended after 4.00pm. The attendees were addressed by a several persons on a number of important topics including Dr. Alyson Plummer of the St. Lucia Bureau of Standards who spoke on the importance of standards and Dr. Stephen King on the soon to be introduced Universal Health Care programme. Mr. Junior Bacchus, President of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Consumer Association was the Guest Speaker.
The new Executive is headed by Mr. Hubert James who was elected unopposed. The work of the Association is well defined and during the current term consumers should benefit substantially from initiatives that will be undertaken by the Executive and general membership.
In the developed world, there are personal coaches, motivational speakers, business trainers and many organizations that promote the system of Affirmation. Many of the Feel Good, Get anything you want systems are promoted by cassette tapes and CDs which keep their users in tune with the systems constantly and they are particularly effective when driving or in any situation where you are able to listen without much distraction.
