STAY IN THE GAME IF YOU WANT TO WIN!!!

Carnival is over. It is back to work. I am happy for Herb Black. He stayed in the game and won big this time around. Carnival is getting bigger and that also attests to the fact that the more you play, the better you will get at the game.

We expressed Freedom during Carnival, many were able to show off their physique. Just when I gave up on ever joining a band as I am not good at exposing my body, I saw the Cozy Guzzlers band and I made a decision to jump next year. There was something for everyone among the options to participate. Great work!

We are now set for Emancipation Day, August 1, 2008. I remember when this day was marked around the region with various activities to celebrate the freedom of our ancestors. This is an opportunity to retrace the steps of our history, recognized the distance we have traveled and cherish the moment by serving our fellowmen with dignity. Then we can truly see our independence as a true manifestation of Freedom. Let us promise to express our freedom in such a manner that will make this sacred achievement worthwhile.

One of the ways that our freedom was expressed was participation in the field of business. St. Lucians can be proud of their involvement in business as they were very successful. However, the entrepreneurial spirit needs to be nurtured, pointing the way to our young people in particular as to the virtues of business. Over the years business has been viewed as exploitative and not given the respect due to this honourable field of endeavour. Business is the engine of growth. It is the major source of revenue that drives the social development of a nation. Micro and Small Businesses have a special role to play in employment and equipping citizens for entrepreneurial involvement.

It is important to note that the St. Lucia Industrial and Small Business Association (SLISBA) celebrates 26 years of continuous service to the private sector in general and the MSME sector in particular. The month of August, 2008 has been designated SMALL BUSINESS MONTH and has received the endorsement of the Minister for Trade, Industry, Commerce, Consumer Affairs and Investment – Hon. Rufus Bousquet. A number of activities are planned for the month. President Hilton Jn Baptiste and Directors of the Board are working diligently at improving the quality of service to the membership. During the last quarter of 2008 attention will be paid to equipping the membership with tools to cope with the challenges of the high cost of doing business and the changing world business environment.

In spite of the several challenges, St. Lucia continues to be the preferred destination for conferences and workshops in the OECS. There is a lot of work being done on the Economic Partnership Agreement between the European Union and Cariforum States which includes Caricom states. There is much more to be done as the governments of the region sign the EPA and seek to implement it. While many continue to boldly state that conferences and workshops are merely talk shops, I have come to the realization that valuable information are passed on and methods of doing things that other wise would not be brought to your notice. There are lots of interesting developments and it is important that business people stay tuned so as to position themselves to make use of the opportunities as they open up.

We have to stay in the game if we are to win it. There is need for greater involvement of business leaders in the discussions that will impact upon well being of their businesses.

Here is my selected quote of the week:
STAY IN THE GAME IF YOU WANT TO WIN
The more you try, the greater your chance of succeeding.
The law of averages is on your side.
Taking a risk is often your first necessary step toward success.
If you don’t take some risks, you won’t get the chance to succeed.
While you are trying, you are winning.
Never get discouraged.
Every wrong attempt is another step forward.
People that make no mistakes usually don’t make anything.
Make up your mind not merely to overcome a thousand obstacles,
but to win in spite of a thousand defeats.
Your mistakes are stepping stones
to success and your installment payments to victory.
You can’t be a winner and be afraid to lose.
