NOTHING CAN COME BETWEEN

EDWARD HARRIS AT LARGE!

NOTHING CAN COME BETWEEN
SAINT LUCIANS & THEIR XMAS CELEBRATIONS!!!

In my last article I somewhat visited Christmas celebrations and recommended gifts, all in an attempt to catch your attention so you can invest in your future. At one time I thought about joining the group that calls for the postponement of Christmas this year. But on reflection I decided against it having enough knowledge about our people when it comes to Christmas.

Many persons feel there is nothing to celebrate this year but in spite of the challenges and sufferings, in the final moments, the majority of St. Lucians will forget their troubles and dance. Christmas is about family and friends, the barrels and remittances will be sent as usual and before you realize what is happening, everybody is merry and having a good time. That is the nature of the Caribbean Person. There can be no better reason for a celebration than the birth of the holy child – Jesus!

Christmas is upon us and as customary at this time of year, it is time for me to send out Greetings for the Holiday Season in my usual optimistic manner, and this year I am not about to change that spirit of optimism. It should not surprise you to note that in spite of the gloom and doom leveled at the economies of the world in the past year, there is still hope. Many of my business associates have expanded their businesses and others have ventured into new areas of activity, some even venturing off shore.

I will be first to admit that the past year was a very difficult one but I am reminded by the statement of one of my dear friends who is a Financial Specialist – in referring to the financial melt down informed me “THIS TOO WILL PASS”. Business closures have been at a minimum in spite of the economic pressures. There has been no retrenchment in the public sector. In St. Lucia, the driver of our economy is Tourism, which is experiencing its best season ever. The cruise arrivals are doing exceptional well with three and four vessels in port Castries some days. Airlift is positive. The Hewanorra Airport is extremely busy with flights coming in from every major destination.

Real Estate is coming back and the New Year looks very promising. This is the time for us to impress upon members of the Caribbean Diaspora and in particular St. Lucians living abroad to invest in property in Saint Lucia. In St. Lucia, it is very difficult to associate the problems of the developed world with the behaviour of our local people. St. Lucia continues to hold its own as a destination of choice for investment, vacation and retirement.

There are more places to visit in St. Lucia this year than last year. The recreation and entertainment segment of the market has expanded. Rodney Bay and Gros Islet have added several new offerings. A few days ago a young local entrepreneur launched a signature entertain complex – Tequila Joe in the Rodney Bay Village. It is located on the Rodney Bay Strip and what a statement it is. Congratulations to Mr. Ulric Augustin and his team for outstanding performances in 1. Construction time, and 2. The current outcome which I understand is a work in progress. This is a venture that St. Lucians can be justly proud and it deserves our support. It is a prime Franchise Opportunity and I expect to see many more Tequila Joe Entertainment Complexes around the region and beyond.

There are lots of surprises for those of us who will explore our island and look around at the developments. I visited Morenu Botanical Gardens a few days ago. It is an interesting Eco project in Ti Rocher, Micoud. I actually got involved in cooking by the river. The experience brought back many memories. I recommend a visit to this unique project. Mr. J. B. Joseph and his team should be congratulated for a well thought out project that will bring joy to many hearts – young and old alike.

I am confident that the 2010 will see a return to investment flows in every sector which will be gratifying as we strive to sustain the level of profitability that is consistent with our various businesses. In my final article for 2009, I will point to some important areas for investment in the New Year.

Let us continue to network and share experiences, and put the internet to work for us as we reach out to our neigbours in the Global Village.

Hereunder is my selected motivational pick of the week:
Find The Good Side To Every Situation
You cannot have the success without the failures.
Any experience can be transformed into something of value.
Everything depends on the way you look at things.
What are stumbling blocks and defeat before you can be stepping stones to victory if you remain determined.
In all of your adversities lie the seeds of equivalent advantages.
In every defeat there is a lesson showing you how to win the next time.
View your problems as opportunities.
When it’s dark enough you can see the stars
