HARRIS AT LARGE IS BACK!

I thank my readers for their patience in allowing me to take the time off to achieve one of my major goals in life – to be a published author. It is great to be back in Saint Lucia in spite of the ravages left behind by Hurricane Tomas. I sympathise with persons who have lost family and friends. I am more than ever convinced that we never know when we will be called to higher service, and it is necessary for us to live each day as if it is our last – loving each other.

Once again, it has been my privilege and pleasure to visit the continent of Africa, this time – The United Republic of Tanzania, www.tanzania.go.tz The United Republic of Tanzania was formed out of the union of two sovereign states namely Tanganyika and Zanzibar. Tanganyika became a sovereign state on 9th December, 1961 and became a Republic the following year.  Zanzibar became independent on 10th December, 1963 and the People’s Republic of Zanzibar was established after the revolution of 12th January, 1964. The two sovereign republics formed the United Republic of Tanzania on 26th April, 1964. However, the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania is a unitary republic consisting of the Union Government and the Zanzibar Revolutionary Government. Those of us who are old enough will remember President Julius Nyerere.

The country has the largest concentration of wild animals. It also has pristine sandy beaches and Africa’s highest and snow-capped mountain, Mt. Kilimanjaro. Tanzania is home to the world famous National Parks and Game Reserves of: Ngorongoro Crater, Selous Game Reserve, Gombe Stream, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Mikumi, Arusha, Ruaha, Saadani, Udzungwa Mountains, and Mkomazi Game Reserve. Other Game Reserves include: Amani, Kigosi, Lukwika-Lumesule, Maswa, Monduli Mountains, Msangesi and Ugala.

Many of our young people are not aware of the days when African countries were gaining their independence from their colonial masters and were introducing their version of socialism which appealed to their people. Our people in the Caribbean need to know more about Africa. African History should be taught in schools.

Tanzania has an area of 947,300 square kilometers and a population on forty million. Tanzania is now a part of the East African Community which includes 5 of the 8 border countries (highlighted): Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia, a market of 130 million with prospects of expanding when the three other nations join. Since my return, I have been sharing my experiences with my friends and I get the feeling that many of them are beginning to realize the need to visit the Mother Land. My colleagues are very keen on visiting Tanzania in March of 2011. Plans will be put in place to formalize a Business/Familarisation Mission shortly.

I was invited by a friend to spend a few months in the City of Arusha which is one of the principal tourist area in Tanzania where I wrote three books and made a study of the publishing business. Since I returned to St. Lucia I have been speaking with Writers and finding out more about experiences of Published Authors. I am encouraged by the fact that many young people are attracted to the vocation. Miss Syreeta “Tu-Che” Alcee’ – author, song writer, singer and entrepreneur is making a serious statement in the digital and print media. Her online advertising business, Digital Connection St. Lucia Inc. www.dcslu.com is supported by TOUCHE’ Magazine. She recently published her first book – “A Better Life” currently available in paperback and will be hosting a programme on HWTV in time for the holidays.

My new area of involvement is in writing and publishing non-fiction books, and as always I am ready to share my experiences with the world. I made contact with members of the Writers’ Forum before returning home and I will attend their meetings. It is a great feeling to be a published author, when I saw my first book on www.amazon.com my whole being celebrated. I always wanted to leave a legacy that will change lives. I want to share my experiences in religion, business, politics, romance and self improvement. I am so excited about my next book which is scheduled to be released early December – “You can be a Successful Business Person” with the subtitle Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Fundamentals. There are lots of papers produced on business in the Caribbean but I am unaware of any business person in the region setting out in simple terms how to implement a business and be successful.  Get a new understanding of the word GREED and how to apply it in your business without using it at the expense of others. I refer to its application as Ethical Greed. In the book I shared my own failures, I don’t speak only about successes, that is the easy part but it is for entrepreneurs to prevent pitfalls that is most important.

With a serious business approach to writing, St. Lucian Authors could add yet another product to the existing range of tourism products. Cruise passengers could be a hot market for selling published books. There is need for book exhibitions and book signing events to promote the work of our local writers. Since my return I was able to share my thoughts with a young entrepreneur who has already put in place arrangements to host a Book Exhibition at the City Hall from December 14 – 17, 2010. Published authors will get a timely exposure to promote and sell their books in time for the holiday season.

I am confident that St. Lucia will be back on its feet in the shortest possible time and everything will be OK once again.

Keep the Faith, God is in Charge, Dream Big and expect Daily Miracles!
