KEEPING THE FAITH!

It is that time of year when people of goodwill all over the world take time out to remember loved ones and friends and to wish them a Holiday Season filled with joy! To you my valued readers, I wish that you will have a Blessed Christmas!

In the past few weeks a lot of sensitive information regarding the world economic future arrived in my inbox and I will share an interesting development in my New Year article. In the meantime, I exhort my fellow Entrepreneurs to be ready for the largest Wealth Transfer in history. Credible information and acting in a timely manner will be key.

It takes FAITH to survive in these difficult times. It is such a challenge to many that they loose a sense of direction failing to take the necessary actions that will have life changing effect. Where is the information available to guide them to a better life? It will take a lot of doing and leadership will be critical in charting a new direction for our people –young and old.

While everyone expects a miracle, it is necessary to be in the right place at the right time with an open mind. Every opportunity should be taken to take advantage of events that are uplifting when they occur and with the state of the economy as it is, especially when the events are FREE. Sometimes the best opportunities in life come without a price tag. You just have to be ready. Some experts claim that Turning Up is 99% success. Get involved in things that matter, get the type of exposure that will transform your live.

The Gift and Book Show held from December 14 to 17 at the Castries City Council Auditorium was very revealing. If we continue to say that St. Lucians don’t read, we are sure to end up in a state where our people because of lack of information will be left behind. This is not a very pleasant state of affairs. Everyone seems to agree that we have a problem which must be dealt with as a matter of urgency. The official of the Ministry of Education and Culture who addressed the Opening Ceremony of the Gift and Book Show alluded to the problem of reading and that efforts will be made at the Primary School level to arrest the situation.

Looking ahead, the greatest challenge facing writers is marketing/sales of their products. In discussions with published authors others with an interest in becoming authors, the problem of identifying reputable publishers and printing companies pose a major problem which is currently limiting advances in the industry. Another area of concern is that since St. Lucians cannot be relied upon to provide the level of support in purchasing the work of published authors, it will be necessary in the short run to tap the cruise ship passengers and other types of vacationers on island, while addressing the challenge of reaching the global market. The future progress within the Literary Publishing Subsector can only be done with Writers getting together and sharing information on the Industry and encouraging collective writing – anthologies.

The St. Lucia Writers Forum held an impressive Awards Ceremony last Saturday evening which was well attended. The Honourable Prime Minister addressed the audience and pledged support for the group. I am encouraged by the level of interest being shown by local writers and I feel strongly that the time has come to take the industry to the next level.

Looking to the future, I am hoping that with the cooperation of fellow writers we can enter a phase of development that will ensure viability of the industry. Within the first quarter of the New Year, Writers have agreed to establish an entity that will publish and market their work. Another development of interest is that the management of HWTV, channels 42 Lime and 78 Karibcable will be giving Writers an opportunity to speak about their books and recite poetry in a weekly half hour programme.

It is not easy to ignore the hardships that are currently being experienced by persons in our midst and it is necessary to share and care for the less fortunate, especially those persons who lost their homes in the passage of the recent hurricane. Let us so live that in all things, we can give thanks.

Keep the Faith, God is in Charge, Dream Big and expect Daily Miracles!
