WHAT’S IN A NAME?

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

St. Lucia Jazz, April 30 to May 8, 2011. Twenty years of being the number one party in the Caribbean. It was nine days of Jazz which was somewhat dampened in the early stages by the inclement weather but ended up on the last weekend with great weather. As usual the mothers came out in their numbers to enjoy the ambiance of the Pigeon Island National Park and great music.

I did not get around much this year but I can’t ignore the musical treat I had at the Fire Grill in Rodney Bay last Friday night when I stumbled upon the sweet brass music. What’s in a name? Upon finding out what was the name of the band, several persons provided to information to the top of their voices – it is the BAD ASS BRASS band. As I mingled among the patrons, some people were saying the guys have to be from New Orleans but later I met the lady who was playing the largest saxophone I ever saw and she informed that they were a group from the UK. The band lived up to the name, it is really a BAD ASS BRASS BAND. The Music just blew my mind. There is a lot in a name. A name can say it all. In the case of the BABB, the name sent a signal of great expectation and they delivered. The name did something to me. I will remember their performance for a long time and will venture to suggest that the band be booked for the 21st Anniversary of St. Lucia Jazz. Such a strong introduction needs an encore!

It is always great to relax and recharge your energy, especially in an atmosphere of musical bliss. Two couples flew in from New Jersey to savour the weekend Jazz and what an experience it was for them. All the time they kept saying St. Lucia Nice! We have something great in our tourism offerings. St. Lucia Jazz is special and everything should be done to maintain the high profile of the event to which patrons have become accustomed. Everything must be done to ensure that the number 21 is truly a coming of age and the significance should be recognised. It is a signature anniversary. I must be great! A way must be found to involve St. Lucians in the promotion of the various tourism offerings, especially Jazz and Carnival. Last year I suggested that the MLM system be introduce to market St. Lucia’s tourism products/services. Such a project will not only give incentives to the Affiliates but also raise substantial revenue for the government helping to meet some of the expenses of the Tourist Board.

It is my hope that we are paying serious attention to the tourist traffic out of Martinique. It is necessary to do everything possible to expand this traffic. Our top of the line Boutiques and Restaurants are doing well with visitors from Martinique. The Caribbean visitor traffic should bounce back with cheaper fares which are being discussed as offered by Red Jet and Caribbean Airways. I cannot wait for these services to be introduced.

Let us keep discussing the ideas; St. Lucia is a wonderful island with great people. Unfortunately, too many are waiting for someone else to take the first move. Failure has become such a stigma that no one wants to venture out on anything. The recent case of President Obama taking the decision to take out Osama, what if the mission failed? Had President Obama given the possibility of a failed mission too much thought, he would have called it off but rather he executed the plan. That is one of the sure ways of success – Just do it!

In planning your action it is important that you listen to your trusted allies but the final decision is yours. I am noting in recent times everyone seeks to give advice but in accepting the advice, you must be sure that you and the person giving the advice provide you with options. There are some investments that are not as straight forward as they seem. It can be simple but not easy. Too many people are willing to offer advice without having experience in the specific area where it is being sought. These are serious times when you have to think outside of the box. In today’s business environment you will be invited to participate in business opportunities that are beyond your expertise. You should have an open mind and seek expert advice when necessary.

The time has come to share risks and generally do things together. There is strength in numbers. Let us do it together. We now have access to the world, our market is no longer St. Lucia and maybe the rest of the Caribbean, it is the world. Find your niche and go to work with a product the world is waiting for.
