GUYANA – SAINT LUCIA ASSOCIATION HAS A NEW EXECUTIVE!Â
The Guyana-Saint Lucia Association held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday, 2nd July, 2011 at the Castries City Hall. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Sherwin Griffith who ended his two year term as President.Â
Mr. Joseph (Reds) Perriera, Sports Broadcaster and Consultant was the Guest Speaker. He drew the attention of Guyanese and friends gathered about the achievements of Guyanese through the years as they excelled in various fields of endeavour at home and abroad, encouraging them to be proud of their heritage. His presentation was well received. Â
Mr. Lokesh Singh, Honorary Consul for Guyana to Saint Lucia congratulated the outgoing Executive and thanked all persons present for keeping the Association alive. He spoke about developments at home and announced that it was approved for birth certificates to be issued at his office for children born to Guyanese parents. Regarding the issue of regularising the status of Guyanese who have been resident in St. Lucia without proper documentation, Mr. Singh said it was necessary for them to get their affairs in order. Â
Mr. Griffith thanked members of his Executive and the general membership for their support during his term of office and promised to continue to support the efforts of Association. He served as the Returning Officer for the Elections of the new Executive. The elections produced the following results: Edward Harris – President, Sunil Persaud – Vice President, Sherlon Parks – Secretary, Winston Setal – Treasurer,  Orrette Thomas – Public Relations Officer, Committee Members – Dawn Ogle, Horace Fraser and Abdool Khan. Â
President – Edward Harris thanked the membership for giving him another opportunity to serve and promised to ensure that the Association delivers on its mandate. The first Executive Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at 6.00 pm.
In recent years the Association has been involved in several social activities that aim at bringing Guyanese and St. Lucians closer. Generally, the relationship has been cordial. Outstanding Guyanese have been recognized for their contribution to the St. Lucian community.Â
The FREE – Be Your Own Boss Opportunity Meeting held at the Bay Gardens Inn on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 was well attended  and the participants were very receptive to the offerings. There was something for everyone. Similar meetings will be held in Vieux Fort, Soufriere, and other districts as the group responds to requests for such meetings. The combination of Real Estate, Multi Level Marketing and Direct Selling packaged as a Home Based Business has been well received as there is great need for generating income whether you are unemployed, under-employed or employed. There is never enough money to meet the financial demands placed on the income most persons.
The news regarding the world’s economy still leave us without any assurance about the future. The political environment in the USA does not lend itself to the need for a united approach to solving the financial crisis that is looming over the country. There is enough evidence to be concerned about another financial meltdown if nothing is done to arrest the financial hemorrhage currently taking place. The politicians on Capitol Hill must come together to find solutions to put the people back to work. What is the solution to the present unemployment situation? Â
There is need for concern for our future as the economic situation continues to decline, especially in the USA. Our dependence on Tourism is becoming greater with every passing day while uncertainty reigns everywhere. Foreign Direct Investment has almost dried up. What steps can be taken to arrest the situation? Every citizen should be mobilised to participate in the promotion of St. Lucia’s Tourism. How many Linkedin, Twitter and Facebook subscribers promote St. Lucia? How many persons with websites carry the links of the Government of St. Lucia, Tourist Board and National Development Corporation; these are the main links and there are others as well. Everything should be done at this time to promote Saint Lucia and the people should be involved as much as possible. Â
Together, we can make things better.Â
Remember always to Keep the Faith, God is in Charge, Dream Big and expect Daily Miracles!Â
