TUMULTUOUS TIMES ARE AHEAD!

Who would have imagined that the world would have been in such confusion as it is today? Many leaders have lost their sense of reasoning. There is a Barbadian Calypsonian who declared “This can’t Happen Hereâ€. A lot of things have happened in the land of the Flying Fish and other places around the world since then. As I salute each new day, I ask my Creator to give me the patience to accept the myriad of challenges that will come my way, and the strength to persevere.
In the past week, the COP 26 Summit came to an end with lots of lofty declarations which will depend heavily on available funding which is scarce in these times. Noticeably, the leaders of two superpowers – Russia and China were absent. The latter being a major polluter. They were represented by senior officials of their administrations. President Biden, although he did not get the push needed from Congress with the passing of his Infrastructure Bill, was still able to emerge as the leader who is ready to advance the cause of Clean Energy. Since then, the Infrastructure Bill was signed and we can look forward to America’s role in the future of Clean Energy. They will all be back in a year’s time to assess gains made based on final declarations at the summit.
Continuing to look at the turmoil around the world, we see that the leaders of The People’s Republic of China are acting up and sizing up The People’s Republic of China on Taiwan to enforce their claim that there is but one China, and Taiwan is a part of China. Cuba is having problems, their people want to break loose, and finally, Cuban Americans are joining in the protest from their safe haven in Florida. Russia is building up troops at the Russia-Ukraine border. NATO has already sounded a warning for Russia to desist, while the USA has noted the situation to be of grave concern. Venezuela has gone a bit quiet on Guyana but the lingering claim to three-quarters of Guyana remains very active on the minds of President Nicolas Maduro and his supporters. Guyana is adamant that they will not yield a blade of grass.
While there are all types of postures by leaders outside of the USA, America is having its own problems. Former President,  Donald J. Trump continues to hold out his claim that he is the legitimate president of the United States of America. The drumbeat is getting louder as his support base remains intact. The Democrats are not asserting themselves and telling their truth in an effective manner. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) needs to be more aggressive in its Campaign Strategy if Democrats are to stave off an outright defeat in the midterm elections of 2022. President Trump is in an unenviable position that guarantees him to be the Republican presidential candidate for 2024. However, the Democrats have some time to get their act together for both races, with the former being a little more difficult. I don’t believe the citizens of the USA will go for another term of a Trump administration in three years but the House and Senate races of 2022 are well within their grasp.
On the economic front, America has opened its doors to all vaccinated citizens of the world who are qualified to enter the United States of America. The same situation is also at play where US citizens who are vaccinated can travel to overseas destinations freely. This is great news for the Global Tourism Industry. The Caribbean is in for an extraordinary Winter Season. Cruise ships are coming back and the frequency can only increase if tourists keep within the established protocols and restrain themselves from behaving in a manner that will cause a surge in cases of COVID 19 going forward.
The Government of Saint Lucia marked 100 days in office as it continues to navigate a course for setting the country on a strong social and economic footing. The general mood of citizens seems to be one of patience as further plans for the future of the nation continue to emerge.
Barbados will be in the news in the coming days as the nation gets ready to adopt a Republican Status. Dame Sandra Mason, 72, has been Governor-General of Barbados since 2018 and is now set to be sworn in on November 30, as the President of the Republic on the occasion of the country’s 55th anniversary of independence from Britain. May their future be bright!
Finally, as we welcome a reduction in COVID 19 cases and deaths, let us not hasten to celebrate but rather to be thankful for the mercies that have been bestowed upon us by our Creator. Blessings!
