I can’t believe that we are fast approaching the third week of the first month of this new year. The days are moving along swiftly and many of us are left wondering how the days are running out so fast. Well, I must revert to an old saying when we were young with not much to do, the days lingered and nights even stayed around longer, many of us concluded that we were spending a longer day than 24 hours. Today, with our hectic, on the go lifestyles with packed agendas, the days appear to be shorter but it is the same twenty four hours -   nothing more, nothing less. The Creator of this universe is the same yesterday, today and will be forever! Time waits on no man.

In the first month of what is slated to be an exciting year on all fronts, we in Saint Lucia celebrate Nobel Laureate Week Festival. Nobel Laureate week highlights the achievements and successes of the two Nobel Laureates of Saint Lucia - Sir William Arthur Lewis who won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics in 1979; and Honourable Derek Walcott who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992.

The Chairperson of the Committee, Governor General, Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy under whose guidance the planning committee expanded its scope of the celebrations and gave it the type of activities that can be celebrated as a Festival. The theme is “Celebrating Excellence: Fostering National Pride”. It used to be held for a period of one week; this year it will be held from January 15 to February 4.

You will always be reminded by me that there is never a dull moment in St. Lucia. I refer to St. Lucia as the party island in the Eastern Caribbean. The fun never stops.  This year we welcome the beginning of things to come with the introduction of our Summer Festival with diverse entertainment, cultural and social events. Jazz week will be one of the events to look forward to.

While we speak of Celebrating Excellence and Fostering National Pride, there are persons in our society who are bent on disgracing our nation. In the first ten days of 2017, we have almost recoded as many homicides. All types of causes have been advanced from every quarter of society but one thing is certain we didn’t come to this point overnight. It is a journey that took years. The situation of utter lawlessness is today staring us in our faces. What is the solution? The sociologist, the psychologist all related professions that have something to do with human behaviour are hereby summoned to our help. Our economic future is threatened, our principal export is tourism – we must find answers. If anyone reading this article has the expertise to contribute toward a solution, please go to the government’s website and identify the Ministries that will be concerned with this modern plague of crime.

My own recommendation is that we return to our former values of religious belief, respect for others, establishment of vocational centres and an aggressive campaign of SAYING NO TO DRUGS. Is it time for National Service in the region?

All is not well on the Southern front but in time it is my humble opinion that the matter will be amicably resolved. The 2.6 billion US dollar DSH project is a challenge to many of us as the scope of such a project is beyond our imagination. However, it my belief that most persons will approve of the project when the true facts are known. At the moment there are too many rumours, some false and without basis. As I write this article, 11.01.17, many of my friends have called me to inform me about a meeting being hosted Vieux Fort Concerned Citizens Coalition for Change (VFCCCC) this evening. These types of activities will prepare both Government and citizens for the most important dialogue that will seek the final approval of the majority of our citizens.

So many things are happening at the level of government that I must encourage you to return to as my recommended website of the week.
