WHAT IS THE ACTION PLAN?

Monday, February 25th, 2013

He must choose his Cabinet carefully. He must heed the supplication to have a Government “Call to Action” which challenges the public sector (politicians and civil servants) to develop an innovative enabling environment. This is done through innovative regulatory and service functions in support of the innovative private sector business models, with the potential to achieve commercial success and socio-economic development outcomes.

STRATEGY FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH

Saturday, February 23rd, 2013

Whether there is a change of the governing political party after the election or not, the country is faced with the same socio-economic challenges as were present going into the election. Currently the economy is stagnant and the new government has to get to work. The manifesto promises are very upbeat but the voter is made to feel that capital resources that the country has at its disposal are limited. It is our mind-set perspective that sometimes leads us astray.

GOVERNMENT CALL TO ACTION

In modern marketing language “Call to Action (CTA)” is a banner, button or some type of graphic or text on a website, meant to prompt a user to click it and continue down the track which a consumer takes through an Internet advertising or search system, navigating an e-commerce website and finally converting to a sale. An example of this is a QR (Quick Response) Code which is a matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code), readable by QR scanners, mobile phones with a camera, and smartphones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on white background. The information encoded can be text, URL or other data. Its success can be measured via a conversion rate formula.

May we take this opportunity to thank you all, at home and abroad, for the seemingly endless expressions of sympathy and comfort – verbally, by email and sympathy card as well as your presence at the service of praise and thanksgiving. I was in the throes of writing my weekly column on Saturday grappling with a “Strictly Business” topic, around the issue of innovation policy as a driver for sustainable business growth, when I received a call from my daughter Karen. She was obviously in distress and I had to ask her to repeat herself. I then understood that she was trying to convey to me that her grandmother Rita Springer, otherwise known as Rites or Gaggie, was on her last breath.

Today, this country celebrates “Errol Barrow” day in Barbados. It is the anniversary birth date of one of its most illustrious sons, National Hero the Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow. It was reported, one year ago, in another section of the national press: “It is important that we recognize in these troubling days the sterling record of this great leader. He was never given to excess of any kind, and pragmatism was one of his most obvious qualities. His work as a leader and his visionary achievements are not the only reason we have succeeded in steering our ship of state successfully through troubled waters since 1966; but we owe a large part of our national success to the clear and pragmatic vision of this undoubted National Hero!”

A NEW YEAR, A FRESH GUARD

Monday, January 7th, 2013

We talk about the economic slowdown and wonder when the economy is going to recover. A major solution to the problem is entrepreneurship development. Much lip service is paid to it but not enough public and private sector action in terms of financial investment and shepherding.

2013: ACTION, ACTION, ACTION

Talking about a rocking chair, there is a comfort concept shared in the Daily Word (www.unity.org) which states: “When I settle into my favourite chair, I feel supported. The chair knows my body and has adjusted over time to fit my shape. I don’t have to do anything to receive the strength and comfort this piece of furniture affords me. I simply relax into its frame and allow myself to rest. God’s love, like my favourite chair, knows me and makes no demands on me. It is available whenever I choose to seek its solace. In prayer, I turn within and feel God’s love enfolding me”.
